Vitamin K2 is essential for the carboxylation of glutamate residues in certain proteins, to give-carboxyglutamate. This modification allows the protein to bind calcium, an essential event in the blood clotting cascade. Carboxylation of glutamate is also important in other proteins involved in the mobilization or transport of calcium. Vitamin K2 is also a known of SXR. Currently in Japan, Vitamin K2 is being used to treat the degenerative bone disease osteoporosis.

Menaquinones are isoprenoid quinones of the naphthalene series and belongs to the K2 Vitamin homologs. Menaquinones were originally discovered as the anti-hemorrhagic factor and now encompasses a vari ety of physiological processes. Menaquinone 4 has four isoprene residue in its side chain and is also commonly refered to as menatetrenone. Menaquinone-4 is the most common type of vitamin K2 and is k nown as a hemostatic agent and is used as adjunctive therapy for the pain of osteoporosis.

Function

Vitamin K2 is a fatsoluble vitamin,it is needed to manufacture prothrombin, a substance essential for the normal clotting of blood.
