Product Description

CAS 61788-47-4 Coconut Oil Fatty Acid For Soap Making And Detergents Coconut Acid

Product Description

Coconut Oil – Fatty Acid Description

Coconut oil is composed predominantly of medium-chain saturated fatty acids. The fatty-acid profile commonly includes lauric acid (C12:0) as the major component, along with caprylic (C8:0) and capric (C10:0), and smaller amounts of other fatty acids. Overall, coconut oil is typically highly saturated (low unsaturation), which contributes to good oxidative stability compared with many vegetable oils.

Fatty Acid Specification

Fatty Acid / Parameter Common Name  % (Range) Test Method
C6:0 Caproic acid 0.2 – 0.6 GC-FAME (AOCS/ISO)
C8:0 Caprylic acid 6.0 – 10.0 GC-FAME
C10:0 Capric acid 4.0 – 8.0 GC-FAME
C12:0 Lauric acid 42.0 – 52.0 GC-FAME
C14:0 Myristic acid 16.0 – 23.0 GC-FAME
C16:0 Palmitic acid 7.0 – 11.0 GC-FAME
C18:0 Stearic acid 1.0 – 4.0 GC-FAME
C18:1 Oleic acid 0.5 – 2.0 GC-FAME
C18:2 Linoleic acid 0.5 – 2.5 GC-FAME
C18:3 Linolenic acid 0.0 – 0.3 GC-FAME

Key Features

  • High lauric acid content → often linked to antibacterial and skin-conditioning benefits in personal-care uses.
  • Medium-chain triglycerides (MCT content) associated with easier digestion/rapid metabolism in nutrition contexts (depends on grading and product type).
  • High saturation → generally better oxidative stability and firmer texture at room temperature than many unsaturated oils.
  • Good moisturizing/emollient behavior → widely used in cosmetics and soaps.
  • Versatile processing → can be used as whole oil or fractionated (e.g., for different melting points/texture).

Applications

1) Food / Nutrition (as ingredient, depending on compliance)

  • Cooking oil, baking fat
  • Confectionery fat (where permitted)
  • Ingredients in spreads, dairy substitutes, and formulations
  • Specialty nutrition products (often labeled by MCT/fraction content where applicable)

2) Personal Care / Cosmetics

  • Moisturizers, creams, lotions, balms, lip care
  • Hair conditioners and scalp treatments
  • Soap and surfactant bars (as triglyceride base/processing oil)
  • Massage oils and body oils

3) Industrial / Oleochemical

  • Soap making and detergents
  • Surface lubricants and greases (in some grades)
  • Lubricant feedstock and chemical intermediates (fatty acid production, esters)

4) Oleochemical/Derivatives

  • Fatty acid distillation products
  • Fractionated stearins/oleins depending on downstream requirements

Packing

Common packaging formats depend on intended market (food vs industrial vs pharma/cosmetic grade):

Packing Type Typical Size Materials
Drum 180–200 kg Steel drum (lined) or fiber drum (lined)
IBC Tote 1000 kg Food-grade/chemical-grade IBC tank
Bulk Tanker 18–24 MT  Tanker for bulk shipment

Storage & Handling Requirements

  • Temperature: store cool and dry; avoid heat sources and direct sunlight.
    • Coconut oil may solidify at cooler temperatures; this is normal.
  • Seal integrity: keep tightly closed to minimize moisture and oxygen exposure.
  • Avoid contamination: use clean transfer equipment; avoid contact with water.
  • Stability: high saturation generally improves oxidative stability, but quality still depends on light/oxygen/heat exposure.
