1. Description

Copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate is an inorganic compound with the molecular formula CuSO₄·5H₂O and a molecular mass of 249.68 g/mol. It is commonly known as blue vitriol and appears as a bright blue triclinic crystalline solid, crystalline granules, or powder. The pentahydrate is the most commonly encountered hydrate of copper(II) sulfate, while the anhydrous form is white.

The compound is odorless with a nauseating metallic taste and becomes white upon dehydration. In its crystal structure, each copper(II) ion is surrounded by four water molecules at the corners of a square, with the fifth and sixth octahedral positions occupied by oxygen atoms from sulfate anions; the fifth water molecule is held by hydrogen bonding.

3. Features

• High water solubility: 220 g/L at 25 °C, remaining in solution in a dissociated ionic state; solubility is largely unaffected by temperature or pH.

• Stepwise thermal dehydration: Loses water in stages — at 88 °C to trihydrate, at 114 °C to monohydrate, at 215 °C to anhydrous CuSO₄, and finally decomposes to CuO at 600–650 °C.

• Weakly acidic aqueous solution: The solution in water acts as a weak acid.

• Non-combustible: Not flammable, not oxidizing, and not explosive under normal conditions.

• Efflorescent in dry air: Blue crystals are minimally efflorescent when exposed to dry air.

• Reactivity: Reacts violently with hydroxylamine (fire hazard), acetylene and potassium chlorate (explosion hazard), and magnesium powder (produces flammable hydrogen gas).

• Hygroscopic but stable when dry: Stable under normal temperature and pressure when kept dry.

Agriculture

• Active ingredient in Bordeaux mixture (with lime) as a fungicides for grapes, melons, and berries.

• Used as a pesticide, germicide, feed additive (15–170 mg Cu/kg feedstuff for all animal species), and soil additive.

• Algicide and herbicide for water treatment, irrigation canals, and rice fields.

Aquaculture

• Widely used in catfish aquaculture for its phytotoxic, parasiticidal, and molluscicidal properties.

• Dilute solutions are used to treat aquarium fish for parasitic infections and to remove snails.

Analytical Chemistry

• Component of Fehling's solution and Benedict's solution for testing reducing sugars.

• Used in the Biuret test for protein detection.

• Utilized as a reagent in analytical chemistry for various qualitative and quantitative determinations.

Electroplating & Metal Treatment

• Primary copper ion source in electroplating solutions for uniform copper deposition on conductive surfaces.

• Used for etching zinc or copper plates in intaglio printmaking.

• Provides corrosion resistance and aesthetic appeal in electronics, jewelry, and automotive components.

Organic Synthesis

• Combined with potassium permanganate to form an oxidant for converting primary alcohols.
