Description

Potassium Isobutyl Xanthate, abbreviated PIBX, is the potassium salt of isobutyl dithiocarbonate (isobutyl xanthic acid) with the chemical formula C5H9KOS2 and a molecular weight of 188.35 g/mol. It is a pale yellow to yellowish powder or granule that is easily soluble in water and slightly soluble in organic solvents such as alcohol.

As a thiocarbonate collector, the xanthate group readily adsorbs onto the surface of sulfide minerals, forming a hydrophobic film that improves mineral floatability and recovery. Its medium-length carbon chain gives PIBX stronger collecting power plus better selectivity than short-chain xanthates such as ethyl or isopropyl xanthate, making it a popular choice for copper-zinc and polymetallic sulfide flotation circuits. It should be stored in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place away from light, heat and moisture, and kept away from acids and oxidizing agents to avoid decomposition.
