1. Description

Caprylic acid, also known as octanoic acid, is a medium-chain fatty acid (MCFA) with the chemical formula C₈H₁₆O₂. It is a naturally occurring saturated fatty acid found in coconut oil, palm kernel oil, and the milk of some mammals. At room temperature, it is a colorless to light yellow oily liquid with a characteristic, slightly unpleasant, rancid odor. It is classified as a carboxylic acid.

• Medium-Chain Triglyceride (MCT) Precursor: A primary component in the manufacture of MCT oils, which are rapidly metabolized for energy.
• Natural Origin: Sourced from renewable vegetable oils like coconut and palm kernel.
• Antibacterial & Antifungal Activity: Effective against a broad spectrum of bacteria, yeasts (like Candida albicans), and fungi. It disrupts microbial cell membranes.

6. Storage & Handling

• Storage Conditions: Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from heat sources, sparks, and open flame. Keep containers tightly closed when not in use. Temperature should preferably be above its melting point (≥20°C) to keep it in liquid form.
• Shelf Life: Typically 24 months from the date of manufacture when stored under recommended conditions.
• Material Compatibility: Use storage and handling equipment made of stainless steel (304, 316), aluminum, or HDPE. Avoid contact with strong oxidizing agents, strong bases, and reactive metals.
• Safety & Handling:
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Wear chemical-resistant gloves, safety goggles, and protective clothing.
  • Ventilation: Use with adequate ventilation or local exhaust to avoid vapor/mist inhalation.
  • Spills: Absorb with inert material (sand, vermiculite) and dispose of according to local regulations. Avoid release into the environment.
  • First Aid: In case of eye contact, rinse immediately with plenty of water. For skin contact, wash with soap and water. If ingested, do NOT induce vomiting; seek medical attention.
